Hello
Welcome to Pathways Counseling. I'm Janet Dougherty, a licensed professional counselor dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey towards growth, healing, and overall well-being. Making the decision to seek counseling is a courageous step, and I commend you for prioritizing your mental health.
I was born in Dimmitt, Texas in 1962, into a military family that moved around frequently due to my father's service as a US Army officer. Growing up, I lived on various military bases across the United States, with my mother caring for me and my three siblings.
During high school, I pursued my interest in cosmetology and earned my license in 1980. Despite my early career path, I felt compelled to further my education. I excelled academically and graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science.
Continuing my educational journey, I obtained a master’s degree in counseling from Texas A&M University – Commerce. This led me into a career in high school counseling, where I specialized in assisting at-risk and crisis students. In 2011, after becoming a licensed professional counselor, I completed my Ph.D. from Texas A&M University – Commerce, focusing my dissertation on grief.
Establishing my private counseling practice in 2011, I dedicated myself to helping individuals cope with grief and trauma. Concurrently, I volunteered with the local police department, receiving recognition for my commitment to community service. In 2015, I retired from the education system to focus entirely on counseling and community service.
With over 17 years of experience in trauma and grief counseling, I've been honored with various awards from the local police department for my dedication. Additionally, I channeled my experiences into a book of poetry, published in 2018, to aid in my own healing and offer solace to others.
My diverse background and experiences have fueled my passion for guiding others towards healing and wholeness.
My approach
My approach incorporates humanistic principles, utilizing Gestalt techniques, Expressive Arts, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy. EMDR is an evidence-based method that can help process and heal from traumatic experiences or deeply ingrained negative beliefs. I may suggest "homework" assignments to reinforce new skills or behaviors, but participation is entirely voluntary. Rooted in Adlerian theory, I believe you possess inherent wisdom and resources for personal growth, even if not immediately accessible.
In our safe, non-judgmental space, I will provide thoughtful feedback and guidance, empowering you to reach your goals and unlock your full potential. Together, we will embark on a collaborative journey towards the personal transformation you seek.
“There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.”
